Water Mist Fire Suppression Systems

Water mist fire suppression systems are attractive in certain situations  as they can use only 10% of the water used by conventional fire sprinkler systems. They can minimise damage to sensitive equipment and also eliminate the splatter of liquid fuel associated with sprinklers.

In a water mist system, water is forced under pressure through special nozzles producing a particle size of the water droplets much smaller than is achieved with conventional sprinkler systems. The particle size of the water droplets in the mist is a critical parameter as it directly influences the effectiveness of the spray.

The droplet size can be fine tuned for a specific fire fighting application by using various pressure and nozzle combinations.

When the water mist comes into contact with a fire the droplets rapidly evaporate into steam. This draws heat out of the fire and surrounding areas. When a water droplet turns into steam it expands in volume by some 1700 times and displaces oxygen from the area further reducing the fire.

Suitability of Water Mist Systems

There is no doubt that water mist fire suppression systems are ideally suited to certain situations and give benefits of effective fire fighting with reduced water usage.

However water mist is relatively low in density meaning it is more difficult to direct and can be easily diverted from its intended path by any movement of air currents.

In the heat of a fire, air currents are formed by rising heat and if the fire is in an open space, or in rooms with openings such as doorways and windows. the water mist can be diverted by air currents away from the fire. Conventional water fire sprinkler systems have much bigger and therefore denser droplet size which is not as easily diverted from its intended path.
